HRA Pharmacy Assurance: Pharmacist and Pharmacy Technician Reviewer Registration

10 Aug 2018

The Health Research Authority (HRA) are currently inviting Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians to register to become HRA Pharmacy Assurance Reviewers. HRA Pharmacy Assurance is a UK wide collaboration, designed by experts, following feedback from stakeholders regarding delays at local pharmacy review, due to inconsistencies in the standard and timing of pharmacy information provided by the sponsor. The aim of Pharmacy Assurance is to provide a service to streamline the review of studies by coordinating a single pharmacy technical review which can be used by all participating NHS/HSC sites. Pharmacy Assurance will have a phased implementation; the first phase of rollout covers all Phase I, II and II/III oncology studies taking place in the NHS/HSC and will commence in autumn 2018.

By implementing a single pharmacy technical review, Pharmacy Assurance will help to streamline not just the review process itself, but also the capacity and capability reviews conducted at participating sites. Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians who review studies through this process will be assisting in reaching these goals. Additionally, they would be undertaking a professional role to support a UK-wide process and contributing to improving healthcare in the UK. A standardised review fee will be paid from the sponsor to the reviewing trust/health board in line with the Payments Framework Guidance to support this role.

The HRA are currently accepting registration of reviewers with expertise in one or more of the following clinical specialisms:

  • Adult Oncology
  • Paediatric Oncology
  • Radiopharmacy
  • Advanced Therapy IMPs (ATIMPs)

Candidates should have experience of carrying out local pharmacy reviews. Further details of the role requirements can be found in the role description. Candidates who meet the requirements laid out in the role description and are interested must provide the following to the HRA:

  • Proof of registration to the appropriate professional body
  • A current two-page CV
  • A completed HRA Reviewer Registration form
  • A letter of support from their line manager
  • A covering letter describing how they met the role requirements

The above documents should be submitted to hra.pharmacyassurance@nhs.net by 31 August 2018.

A short online training course about the review process will be provided to successful candidates. On completion of this training, reviewers will be registered with the HRA and provided with a reviewer registration number.

A copy of the role description, Reviewer Registration Form and further details about the Pharmacy Assurance process can be found on the HRA website.
