Cardiff Paediatric ECMC is located at the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales (NACHfW) on the outskirts of the city. The dedicated children’s hospital was opened in 2005 and was the first purpose-built children's hospital in Wales. Children with cancer are treated on Rainbow Ward and Teenagers and Young Adults (TYA) of age 16-25 years are treated at the Teenage and Young Adult Unit. Cardiff is a Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) for new cancer referrals in South Wales. We have a designated Children and Young Adult Research Unit (CYARU) which is the first purpose-built research unit for children and young adults in Wales. We accept referrals for early phase trial participation from other centres in the UK.
Who we are:
The Cardiff Paediatric ECMC is part of the national Paediatric ECMC Network and joined in 2023. Cardiff has a committed and established medical and research team with consultant paediatric oncologists, haematologists, research nurses, oncology pharmacists, a trial coordinator, and a data manager. Staff are experienced and are actively involved in national & international clinical trials including early-phase, phase 3 treatment, translational research, pharmacokinetic/pharmacology studies in solid tumours, leukaemia, and benign haematology. A number of national and international studies to assess quality of life for patients on treatment for cancer, have been led from our centre.

The Paediatric ECMC site has dedicated facilities including inpatient beds/high-dependency area, designated day care unit, outpatient unit, and an intensive care unit to meet any possible requirements of cancer patients undergoing treatment or clinical trials in Cardiff. We also have on site accommodation to support children and families who travel to the centre.
Our patient population:
There are approximately 80 new cancer diagnosis’ in South Wales per year. Newly diagnosed cancer patients commence treatment in Cardiff and then may be supported by our paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units (POSCU’s). Approximately 20 patients will have recurrent / refractory disease that require additional treatment, including participation to early phase studies.
